The projects, which will have an aggregate generating capacity of 1,212MW, are expected to be developed in the next three to four years.

The developments include a 500MW Wawa project in Rizal, a 160MW facility in Davao City, a 240MW plant in Tabuk, Kalinga and a 312MW pumped storage and run-of-river plant in Bolusao, Samar.

The $873m Wawa project will provide 500MW to 1,000 MW of pumped storage power capacity for peaking use in the Luzon grid and supply water to Metro Manila.

ABS-CBN News reported the Davao facility will provide additional power and eliminate the region’s reliance on more expensive fuel for coal-fired and oil-based power plants.

Upon completion, the Tabuk plant will be linked to the Luzon grid and have access to the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market.

SLRB president and chief executive officer Oscar Violago said the projects will help to tackle the power crisis in the Philippines.

The Philippines Energy Department has approved all the four projects, which are still subject to environmental clearance.

SLRB’s first development was the $680m Casecnan hydroelectric project, which has been providing 150MW of power and irrigation to Nueva Ecija since 2001.
