Due to the superstorm, about 5,300MW of generation was out of service, which is nearly 13% of New York’s total in-state generating capacity of 39,570MW. A megawatt power serves the electricity needs of about 800 to 1000 homes.

NYISO noted that the state’s bulk electric system was meeting all criteria for transmission and operating reserves despite the storm damage.

Demand early Tuesday was about 4,400MW lower than it was at the same time Monday in advance of Sandy’s making landfall. Statewide load on 29 October was 16,830MW.

The grid operator said Tuesday’s peak demand was expected to be 15,000MW, down from an average peak load of about 20,000MW experienced on a normal day this month.

NYISO continues to monitor system conditions following the storm in addition to working with the state’s electric utilities, power producers and government agencies.
