Under the MYR619m ($188.7m) contracts, Sarawak Cable’s wholly owned subsidiary, Trenergy Infrastructure and Sinohydro will construct two sections of the 500kV backbone, from Mapai to Lachau, also called Package B, and Lachau to Tondong under Package C.

Sarawak Energy CEO Datuk Torstein Dale Sjotveit said "The award of two packages are in line with the key objective of the company’s procurement process which is to achieve the best possible value for the State and maximize the participation of local businesses."

"The 500kV transmission backbone project will support the future development of Sarawak Energy’s generating system and provide a secured supply to the fast-expanding SCORE customers," Sjotveit added.

"In turn, more transmission capacity is required to strengthen the current electricity supply into Kuching and southwestern Sarawak."

Trenergy Infrastructure managing director Aaron Toh said, "With our proven track record and quality of delivery, we are confident that works will be completed within the time and cost."

The project is expected to complete in first quarter of 2016.

The transmission project will prove crucial for Sarawak’s future, by safeguarding the state against the incidence of system blackout.
