These smart meters, which are digital and two-way communicating devices, are being installed as part of the $1.6bn Edison SmartConnect program.

The Edison SmartConnect meters are replacing traditional mechanical meters and provide a key step in transforming the electric system to a smart grid, the utility said.

The utility installed the first smart meter under this program in September 2009 in Downey, and installations will continue through 2012 to nearly five million SCE residential and small-business customers.

SCE said it is partnering with Corix Utilities to perform most of the smart meter installations.
