The project will upgrade outdated processes at the facility to ensure it complies with future environmental specifications.

The facility also provides additional capacity in the local sewerage network to avoid spills and flooding.

The project has been designed to provide for the town’s population and to also treat waste water from Abington Services.

Upon completion, the project will enhance the protection of the water quality in the River Clyde as well as benefiting customers in the village and Abington Service Station.

Construction manager Paul Sharp said the existing works at Abington is now outdated and needs to be upgraded to ensure it meets with future environmental standards on water quality in watercourses.

"This essential work has been carefully planned to ensure we disrupt the people of Abington and the surrounding environment as little as possible," Sharp said.

The project is scheduled to begin in mid January and will take around seven months to complete.

The improvements at Abington are being carried out by Scottish Water Solutions, the project delivery arm of Scottish Water.
