The company is working on the 55km tracks as well as upgrading 14km existing forest track, to link the 96 turbines on the project.

Upon completion in 2017, the facility is expected to be the UK’s third largest onshore windfarm and will have an operational life of 25 years. It is designed to serve around 130,000 households a year.

The £300m project is expected to create 250 jobs during the construction phase.

ScottishPower Renewables construction director Stuart Mason said: "As well as making an important contribution to Scotland’s carbon reduction targets, tens of millions of pounds will go towards supporting community projects in the vicinity of the windfarm.

"This will be ScottishPower Renewables’ second largest windfarm, and the third largest overall in the UK."

Located between the Scottish councils of South Ayrshire and Dumfries and Galloway, the wind power plant aligns with the Scottish Government’s plan to produce 15% of its total power from renewable sources within next five years.

"We currently have more than 1.5GW of installed onshore wind capacity in the UK, and Kilgallioch will help us on our way to achieving a 2GW milestone – enough to power over one million homes," Mason added.
