The 1,320MW Thermal Powertech Corporation India (TPCIL) plant is the first power project of Sembcorp in India.

The project features two units, each with a generation capacity of 660MW, and the second unit is scheduled to enter service in the third quarter.

Expected to meet the increasing power demand in the southern region, the $1.5bn power plant features supercritical technology to enable for enhanced efficiency and reduced emissions when compared to other conventional coal-fired power plants, Sembcorp said.

About 500MW of power generated from the power plant will be sold to Andhra Pradesh and Telangana power distribution companies under 25-year power purchase agreements.

Sembcorp’s wholly-owned subsidiary Sembcorp Utilities owns a 65% stake in TPCIL while the remaining interest is owned by local entity Gayatri Energy Ventures.

Sembcorp is also developing a 1,320MW coal-fired power plant in India, which is scheduled to be completed in 2016.
