The approval marks the PPIB’s second Thar coal-based project permit. The first is 660MW Engro power project.

PPIB said that the Thar coal resource exploitation plays a key role in developing power generation capacity to meet the energy demand.

Considered to be one of the prioritized projects in the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), the new facility is scheduled to commence production in 2017-2018.

A memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed by the PPIB, China Three Gorges and Silk Road Fund to develop private hydropower projects in Pakistan.

The board has approved a standardized tri-partite letter of support to a 150MW coal-based power project in Arifwala, 1,200MW coal-fired projects in Sahiwal, 1,320MW imported coal-fired projects at Port Qasim, and 1,320MW imported coal-based projects in Hub, Balochistan.
