Shaw installed four flue gas desulfurization systems to modernize seven coal-fired units – nearly 2,500MW of electric generating capacity – at Mirant’s Chalk Point, Morgantown and Dickerson generating stations. Now in initial operation, the systems are capable of reducing sulfur dioxide emissions from these coal-fired electric generating units by up to 98%
In addition to the flue gas desulfurization systems, Shaw provided engineering services for a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system for one unit at the Chalk Point Generating Station. This system, which began operation in 2008, is capable of reducing nitrogen oxide emissions by up to 90%.
