The company’s 100% owned project is a part of its broader production, refining and marketing business across the full value chain in North America.

Shell is building the project to develop its Peace River heavy oil leases in the area, and is expected to employ about 1,000 local trades and contractors during peak construction periods.

The project is also designed to eliminate the need for freshwater use for steam generation through recycling of water produced with the oil.

Heavy Oil executive vice president Lorraine Mitchelmore said the Shell is moving ahead with this important project.

"Our decision to invest in Carmon Creek has been carefully studied with the goal of designing a project that is competitive from a commercial, technological and environmental perspective," Mitchelmore added.
