Under the agreement, Siemens will supply 76 SWT 3.0 direct drive wind turbines, besides providing the service and maintenance works through availability contract for five years after the time of commencement of the plant.

The agreement marks the largest contract for 3-MW-direct drive turbine till date in the UK, the company noted.

Vattenfall UK onshore wind development director Piers Guy said the company is delighted to have collaborated with Siemens, placing an important contract for direct drive turbine.

"In addition, it is important for Vattenfall that we contract with main suppliers that are committed to working with the local supply chain for installation, operations and maintenance and so maximising local economic benefit. We expect Siemens to do that," added Guy.

Pen y Cymoedd is estimated to generate power enough to supply electricity demands of 140,000UK households, following its operational commencement scheduled for late 2016.

Vattenfall is expected to use local suppliers for the project and has made a commitment to improve the local environment through a network of mountain bike paths throughout the wind power plant.

Siemens Wind Power EMEA region CEO Jan Kjaersgaard said: "The Pen y Cymoedd project is of special significance to us not only on account of its magnitude.

"The project will contribute to the Welsh Government’s renewable goals."
