Vattenfall and Stadtwerke Munchen are jointly investing around €1.2bn to develop the wind farm, which will be located north-west of the 288MW DanTysk project.

DanTysk is scheduled to be operational in early 2015, while construction on the Sandbank wind farm is expected to start next year.

The Sandbank wind farm will be constructed 90km west of the Sylt island in water depths between 25m and 37m within the exclusive economic zone off the German North Sea coast.

Vattenfall will have a 51% interest in the project, which is estimated to generate 1.4 terawatt-hours of energy per year, capable of supplying around 400,000 homes.

Vattenfall Continental/UK region renewables business unit head Gunnar Groebler said: "The Sandbank project is further testament toVattenfall’s strategy of consistently focusing our growth efforts on the expansion of renewable energy."

Siemens will provide maintenance services for an initial period of five years after completion.

Siemens Energy Wind Power Division CEO Markus Tacke said: "We are very pleased to be joining forces and pooling our shared experience again with Vattenfall to implement another major offshore project.

"Thanks to Vattenfall’s expertise in project construction and operation and Siemens’ innovative technology and service prowess, Sandbank will boldly demonstrate just how far we’ve come in reducing the costs of offshore wind power."
