As per the agreed terms, the company will manage around 79,000 tons of residual household waste annually, over the next seven years.

Sita UK noted that the waste will continue to be sent to its landfill in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, for the first two years.

From 2015, Northamptonshire’s waste is expected to be used at the company’s new solid fuel recovery facility in Rugby, which will be commissioned in 2014.

Commenting on the waste management project, Northamptonshire County Council councillor Michael Clarke said that new project showcases the council’s commitment towards reducing the amount of non-recyclable waste which is landfilled by using innovative solutions.

Suez Environnement CEO Jean-Louis Chaussade said, "We are very pleased to be continuing our relationship with Northamptonshire.

"Once our new facility in Rugby becomes operational we will be able to help put their residual waste to good use by creating an alternative fuel, replacing the use of fossil fuels."

Sita UK has been providing waste management services in Northamptonshire County Council for around 20 years.
