SmartLabs Insteon technology and Sprint’s network infrastructure allows utilities to access and control energy consumption from a simple web portal or a Sprint smartphone.

Insteon-compatible products can operate on the Sprint 3G and 4G networks and these products enable energy management, demand response and scheduled load-shedding with real-time reporting and alerts.

Property owners can schedule electrical devices to be turned on or off and they can also opt-in for the utility to turn devices off when the local demand for electricity exceeds the power supply, the companies said.

Insteon, a home area networking technology, can be used to control indoor and outdoor lighting, security systems, heating and cooling, appliances and door locks.

SmartLabs Smart Grid and Vertical Markets managing director Robert Holz said that the company’s solutions allow utilities and electricity providers to enable more customers in their geographic foot print with affordable home and business energy management.

"In addition, residential, multi-family, small- and medium-sized business consumers will increasingly be able to remotely manage their properties’ energy consumption, water usage, gas safety and security, with Sprint providing the backbone for the messaging," Holz said.

SmartLabs is an integrated technology company in the home area networking and home automation markets.
