SMEPA spokewoman Sara Peterson told Associated Press that the cooperative has won a bankruptcy auction on 13 August to buy the assets of LSP Energy.
Peterson added that SMEPA has been buying a third of the plant’s power under a long-term contract since 1998.
Peterson said the purchase will not change the cooperative’s plan to buy 18.5% of the $2.8bn Kemper County plant that Mississippi Power Co. is constructing.
The sale of Batesville power plant is expected to close by the end of 2012.
Hattiesburg-based SMEPA generates and transmits power to 11 cooperatives in southern and western Mississippi. It provides electric power to over 410,000 homes and businesses.
