The project with a line of 600 miles is valued at $1.5 billion. So far SMUD has spent only $2m of the promised $13m for planning.

The project is not worthy enough to put an investment of $13m, says the SMUD officials.

The venture is supported by 15 municipal power providers, but criticised by the residents near the proposed line.

The remaining groups that are involved in the project would continue with the next steps, informed Brendan Wonnacott, a spokesman for the Transmission Agency of Northern California. But without the funding from SMUD, it is not clear whether the project would continue as planned.
