A microgrid is a small scale energy system that uses distributed energy resources to balance local needs.

According to the company, the microgrid will be an answer to prolonged power outages caused due to natural disasters.

Hurricane Sandy, which occurred in 2012, alone caused more than 8.5 million power outages across 21 US states.

SolarCity’s microgrid is suitable for municipalities, military bases, and remote communities.

GridLogic includes a system of software-based monitoring and controls that manage the mix of distributed energy resources and utility power to maximize savings.

The microgrid systems will have Tesla Motors batteries to store the energy generated.

SolarCity co-founder and chief technical officer Peter Rive said: "The microgrid product is basically a culmination of all of the technology that SolarCity’s been developing over the past eight years."

GridLogic is claimed to provide electricity to communities for less than they pay for utility power.
