The company will install Nest Labs’ Nest Thermostat for 10,000 new customers across California, a move that will cut down electricity costs and carbon footprint.

The Nest Thermostat is claimed to program itself by remembering what temperatures homeowners like and creates a custom schedule for the home and automatically turns itself down when homeowners are away.

By combining the thermostats with rooftop solar will allow a home to be cooled during the day using power only from the solar array.

Nest Thermostat can reduce the customers’ heating bills by around 12% and cooling bills by 15%, according to figures released by three latest energy-savings studies.

SolarCity will also offer qualifying customers access to Nest energy services such as Seasonal Savings, which were previously only available through utilities and government energy programs.
