The company said it would continue exploration and drilling activities to locate new deposits at the site.

Solid Energy is currently rehabilitating the site at an estimated cost of NZ$32m ($32.5m) to meet the conditions of its coal mining license.

Stabilization of pit walls, extinguishing a historic fire to ensure that the pit can hold water in the lake that will be created as part of the three-year rehabilitation programme.

Coal extraction, at the Ohai mine was closed in June 2009, will take place during the next year.
