The projects, which are expected to generate 1,400MW clean energy, will get financial assistance from the government under the program.

South Africa energy minister Dipuo Peters said the contracts will be signed with the 28 selected bidders on November 5, 2012.

The plants are expected to become operational between 2014 and 2016.

The REIPP, introduced in August 2011, aims to reduce the country’s dependence on coal, and also meet the rising demand for power but encouraging green energy sources. It plans to generate 3,200MW clean energy by 2020.

Over 19 projects have been chosen for the second stage of the program, and are likely to be finalized by March 2013, reported Reuters.
