Community Energy will develop the project on 1,070 acres in Taylor County, stating in September.

The acquisition is a part of the company’s effort to expand its business by acquiring and developing generating assets substantially covered by long-term contracts.

Southern Company chairman, president and CEO Thomas Fanning said: "The Butler solar facility builds on Southern Company’s innovative approach to diversifying our nation’s energy mix.

"Our strategic development of solar in Georgia continues our company’s expansion of renewable energy generation in the Southeast."
The facility, which will feature more than one million of thin-film photovoltaic solar modules, is scheduled to be built by First Solar, and will be commissioned in the fourth quarter of 2016.

Georgia Power will purchase electricity and associated renewable energy credits (RECs) generated by the facility under a 30-year power purchase agreement, which also includes an option to keep or sell the RECs.

In Georgia, Southern Power has to date purchased or is constructing solar, wind and biomass projects which have a combined generating capacity of 1,100MW.
