The project, which includes 2.3 million First Solar cadmium telluride thin-film PV modules, a fixed -tilt design and inverters from Converteam, is expected to generate enough electricity to power around 48,000 homes.
First Solar has developed the 1,400-acre project and will also be responsible for providing operation and maintenance services.
San Diego Gas & Electric Company (SDG&E) will buy the output from the project under a 20-year power purchase agreement that will help it to achieve 33% renewable energy delivery mandate as required by California’s renewable portfolio standard.
The Campo Verde solar facility was acquired by Southern Power and Turner Renewable Energy in April 2013 and has become the fifth project jointly acquired by the partnership, bringing their joint solar portfolio to over 220MW in four states.
Southern Company chairman, president and CEO Thomas A. Fanning said the company is working for America’s energy future and solar is a key part of its efforts to provide clean affordable power.
"Completing the Campo Verde Solar Facility helps us strategically incorporate more renewables into our diverse energy portfolio," Fanning added.
