Both the firms will establish a new JV company, which will initially develop 55MW of solar energy projects in the UK.

The companies will procure and develop selected projects with the aim of owning and operating some and selling others to investors.

SPI Solar chairman Xiaofeng Peng said: "WIRCON has amassed a wealth of solar project development experience in Europe over the years, and this agreement provides a foundation for SPI to grow our business in the critically important UK market.

"The UK will be one of our key geographic focus markets in the coming years, and this announcement marks a new milestone for SPI internationally."

Wircon managing director Peter Vest said: "This partnership with SPI is a logical result of the combined strengths that each side brings to the table to take advantage of UK solar project opportunities.

The UK is planning to generate 30% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2020 and the country is currently projected to have between 3.2GW to 4GW of installed solar capacity.
