Scottish and Southern Energy (SEE), which also has 105,000 telecoms customers, said that the eight million figure represents a net increase of 3.5 million, or 78%, since the start of 2002.
It is also an increase of 150,000 since the start of the company’s current financial year on April 1, 2007. SSE had seven million customers in July 2006, and so has gained one million additional customers in less than a year.
Ian Marchant, chief executive of SSE, said: I have no doubt that this sustained growth is the direct result of our policy of responsible pricing, allied to best-in-sector customer service.
Going forward, we are committed to offering customers a combination of price, service and products which will enable us to achieve further growth during the rest of this financial year and beyond, Mr Marchant concluded.
SSE is the third largest supplier of electricity and gas in the UK and supplies electricity and gas under the Southern Electric, Scottish Hydro Electric, SWALEC and Atlantic brands.
