Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) said that the draft proposal comprises a number of elements, and will involve the construction of a high voltage direct current (HVDC) converter site in the Kergord Valley on Shetland and a 7km HVDC underground cable between Kergord and the shoreline at Weisdale Voe.

The proposal also calls for the construction of a 330km HVDC subsea cable circuits between Weisdale and Portgordon on the Moray coast of Scotland, a 17km HVDC underground cable between Portgordon and Blackhillock, and a HVDC converter substation site adjacent to the Blackhillock substation.
