Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE), a British power company, has agreed to acquire Uskmouth Power in exchange of $44.86m in cash from Welsh Power Group.
Uskmouth Power engages in the ownership and operation of a 363MW coal-fired power station near Newport, South Wales, which dates back to 1960s and presently has 100 employees.
The company informed that Uskmouth comprises three independent power generating units, each with a power generation capacity of 121MW. Through this acquisition the company’s electricity generation portfolio would reach 11,000MW. Before the purchase the company had 4,000MW of power generation capacity fueled by coal.
Previously, the company in May 2009 has acquired Abernedd Power from BP, and is seeking the resluts of Abernedd’s application to build a new gas turbine power station on its Brownfield site at Baglan Bay in South Wales.
Ian Marchant, chief executive of SSE, said: ‘It is generally accepted that the UK’s current portfolio of coal-fired power stations still have a crucial role to play in keeping the country’s lights on and Uskmouth has the flexibility to help meet demand for power over the next few years. We are still focusing on our target of reducing the carbon intensity of our power generation by 50% between 2006 and 2020, and Uskmouth will have a role to play in this, since it also provides an opportunity to develop a new lower carbon generation asset on the site.”
