ABB’s GIS will be deployed in two substations that will provide temporary power supply to the transmission line, which is about 500km in length.

The transmission line will run from Ofoten to Balsfjord, and from Balsfjord to Skaidi in Hammerfest.

The contract requires ABB to design, construct and install two ELK-3, 420kV GIS in prefabricated housing during the expansion of two existing substations at Ofoten and Bardufoss.

ABB said the pre-assembled, trailer mounted switchgear units will address the needs for quick energization during Statnett’s grid expansions in the region.

The 420kV switchgear modules will be transferred to the Norwegian ’emergency reserve’ pool after completion of the project.

ABB is expected to deliver the units in 2015 to energize the Ofoten and Bardufoss substations, which are part of Statnett’s investment program intended at ensuring the electricity supply security in northern Norway.

Norway plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30% and increase the renewable share of total energy consumption to 67.5% by 2020.
