Located about 6km southwest of the Grane platform at a water depth of 125m, the Svalin field is estimated to have recoverable reserves of about 75 million barrels of oil. It is equally split between two structures, Svalin C and Svalin M on the field.

The oil field will be developed from the Grane platform which will result in low development costs.

Svalin project manager Bjørn Herdlevær said the company is developing an only oil producing field in the North Sea.

"Grane’s production has been declining, and Svalin will enable us to utilise available capacity," Herdlevær added.

"This will alleviate the decline in oil volumes. The expected lifetime for Grane has been extended to 2030."

Statoil has connected the oil field with the platform and will produce a wellstream from the Svalin M structure through a designated well drilled from the Grane platform, while the Svalin C structure will be a subsea facility tied in to Grane by a six-kilometre production pipeline.
