A Southern Nuclear spokeswoman was quoted by The Augusta Chronicle as saying that the event did not lead to any injuries or release of radioactive material.
Southern Nuclear communications director said the cause of the shutdown is being thoroughly investigated by plant employees.
"Once the repairs are complete, employees will focus on bringing the unit safely back online," Bailey added.
The shutdown was due to a malfunction in a feedwater system that enables water recirculation through a loop that generates the steam necessary to create electricity, onlineAthens reports citing unnamed Southern Co. Officials.
The plant’s Unit 1 was already out of operation due to scheduled refueling and maintenance outage, while additional two reactors are under construction at the site near Waynesboro.
