Sudanese Atomic Energy Agency director-general Mohamed Ahmed Hassan el-Tayeb was quoted by SUNA as saying that the government had begun to plan in early 2010 to develop nuclear energy.

The Ministry of Electricity and Dams has already begun the preparation for the project to produce power from nuclear energy in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and is expected to build the first nuclear power plant in the year 2020.

IAEA delegation would visit Sudan to discuss the project this week, according to the news agency.

Due to sanctions laid down by US decades of warfare, Sudan’s economy has suffered, but it has managed to increase oil production to 470,000 barrels per day.

Sudan has also constructed dams along the Blue and White Niles, which merge in Sudan for generating power.
