The facility is part of £1bn private finance initiative (PFI) contract, signed in October 2010, to manage Suffolk County Council’s residual household waste.

The 25-year contract covers construction of an energy-from-waste facility to recover energy from 269,000t of waste a year, to serve around 30,000 households.

Built with an investment of around £180m, the facility features two waste processing lines and a visitor center. It supported the region with 47 permanent jobs.

The plant is claimed to reduce CO2 emissions by 75,000t.

Suez environnement CEO Jean Louis Chaussade said: "We are delighted to be working with the county of Suffolk, supporting its ambition to become the greenest county in the UK."

The centre currently processes 1000t of waste a day. Since December 2014, it has processed more than 134,000t waste and generated 87,654 megawatt hours of energy.
