Planned to be developed in the Sakata Rinkai Industrial Park located adjacent to the Port of Sakata in Tohoku area, the biomass-fired power generation plant is expected to contribute to Sumitomo unit, Summit Energy’s electric power retail business.

Summit Sakata Power, a company established in December 2012 and wholly-owned unit of Summit Energy, will operate the facility is expected to be one of the largest in the Tohoku region.

Construction work is scheduled to commence in June 2016 while the plant is planned to be commissioned in May 2018.

Sumitomo Materials, Supplies & Real Estate Division will be responsible for the supply of biomass fuels, which will be sourced from within and around Yamagata Prefecture as well as from overseas sources, required for the power plant.

The new facility will be the Summit Energy’s third biomass power plant. The first biomass power plant, 50MW Itoigawa, entered service in January 2005 while the second waste to power plant, 75MW Handa is scheduled to be commissioned in June 2017.

The Handa power plant is being developed in Aichi prefecture as a new power supply source for Summit Energy’s electric power retail business.

Summit Energy expects its biomass power plants to meet the power demands of corporate customers as well as of the household sector.

The electricity supply for the household sector is planned to be deregulated in April 2016.
