The utility firm has entered into two 20-year power purchase agreements with SunEdison for the supply of electricity.

SunEdison Western US solar business regional general manager Sam Youneszadeh said: "We know that air quality is a big concern for residents in the area, but so is getting reliable electricity to a growing, economically important region.

"Solar is a great way for utilities to boost grid reliability without emitting greenhouse gases. Solar is cost effective, quick-to-build, and can easily scale."

Under the deal, SunEdison will install, own and operate each system, which are expected to produce electricity to power 640 California homes per year.

SunEdison plans to construct the systems using a combination of parking canopies and rooftop space.

According to the company, the systems are expected to curb the emission of around 50 million pounds of carbon dioxide over 20 years.

The deal is subject to the approval of California’s Public Utility Commission.

SunEdison is involved in developing and operating renewable power plants, which supplies electricity to the residential, commercial, government and utility customers.
