SunPower and NV Energy have signed a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA), which is subject to approval from Nevada’s Public Utilities Commission.

SunPower will build the Boulder solar plant in the Eldorado Valley of Boulder City. The company expects to start construction work by the end of this year

The company acquired the project from KOMIPO America, a subsidiary of Korea Midland Power, earlier this year.

The project, which is expected to start commercial operation in 2016, is estimated to generate enough energy for over 15,000 homes and reduce about 192,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year.

SunPower expects to design and build an Oasis Power plant system at the site, which optimizes land use and ensures a quicker installation.

After completion, the Boulder solar plant will be transferred to 8point3 Energy Partners, which is the yieldco joint venture of SunPower and First Solar.

SunPower CEO and president Tom Werner said: "Today, power generated from solar plants is cost-competitive with power from traditional, fossil fuel burning plants – and becoming more cost-competitive every day.

"We are pleased to partner again with NV Energy to enable more Nevada homes and businesses to take advantage of the state’s abundant solar resource."
