The company will supply its V series modules to be deployed at utility-scale projects being developed by Siemens.
Expected to generate 180GWh of electricity the solar farms will help reduce a cumulative 180,000t of carbon emissions per annum.
Commenting on the supply contract Mainstream Renewable Power CEO Eddie O’Connor expressed confidence in the Suntech’s ability to deliver qualitative products for the development of lasting solar energy capabilities in the country.
Siemens Solar & Hydro Division CEO Ted Scheidegger noted, "We are all proud to participate in the South African government’s first round of tenders and be awarded as suppliers for these two photovoltaic plants."
The plants are expected to be operational by the middle of 2014 under a South African renewable energy initiative that sets out to have 1.45GW of photovoltaic solar plants installed by the end of 2014 and 8.2GW by 2030.
