Rouar is a joint venture established by Brazilian federal power firm Electrobras and Uruguayan partner Administración Nacional de Usinas y Trasmisiones Eléctricas (UTE).
Located on state-owned land near Tarariras city, Colonia province, the Artilleros wind farm features 31 of Suzlon’s S95-90 turbines.
Electricity generated by the wind farm will be fed into Uruguay’s national grid to meet the region’s energy requirements.
The wind farm will deliver enough energy for about 20,300 million homes in Uruguay and reduce 0.11 million tonnes of CO2 emissions per year.
The facility is the first joint venture between Brazil and Uruguay. It is intended to boost energy security.
Suzlon chairman Tulsi Tanti said: "Suzlon is committed to contribute to Uruguay’s energy basket by reducing its carbon footprint and achieve the country’s vision of energy security and low carbon economy."
Uruguay intends to increase its energy from renewable sources in its total primary consumption to 50% by 2015, when compared to around 40% in 2012.
The country installed 700MW of wind capacity in 2014, up from 59MW in 2013. Uruguay expects to have 1GW of wind capacity by the end of 2015 and meet its target to source 15% of power supply from renewables.
