Suzlon said that the project, supplied with eight units of Suzlon’s S64 1.25MW wind turbines, will come up in the Kalpitiya region of Sri Lanka. Supply of turbines to the project will commence in fiscal 2009, with project completion slated for fiscal 2010.

The order marks a key factor for Sri Lanka’s wind energy sector, as the first project to feature megawatt-class turbines, and also the first project by a private developer.

Rohit Modi, president of Suzlon Energy India, said: “We are pleased to partner with Sri Lanka’s Senok Wind Power for this project. We hope there is a bright future for wind energy in Sri Lanka and have a good partnership in this region with Senok Group.”

Sri Lanka’s Senok Group is a business company with businesses ranging from construction machinery, automotives, infrastructure development, tea, haulage to mining. The group has a presence in the clean energy space with investments in mini-hydro projects. On the other hand, Suzlon is a force in the global wind industry, from its beginnings in 1995.
