Havsnäs Wind Farm, the largest onshore wind farm in Sweden, is being officially opened today, 2 September, at a ceremony attended by Swedish Government officials, senior industry figures, landowners and leaders of the Municipality of Strömsund, whose chairman, Karin Stjierna, will cut the ribbon.

The wind farm, located north of Strömsund, consists of 48 Vestas V90 turbines and has an installed capacity of 95.4 MW. It’s layout was designed and built to optimise energy capture whilst taking account of existing constraints and site sensitivities.

The project consists of 70 kilometres of roads and dirt tracks, a substation and five wind measuring masts. The turbines are situated on three hills; Ritjelsberget (21 turbines), Järvsand (16 turbines) and Ursåsen (11 turbines). Construction took almost two and a half years, commencing in March 2008 and completing in summer 2010. Nordisk Vindkraft carried out the construction, using sub-contractors and local workers for the bulk of the building work.

The wind farm is 75% owned by HgCapital and 25% by Nordisk Vindkraft, leasing the land from local landowners and SCA. The site and wind farm operation is managed by Nordisk Vindkraft.

Nordisk Vindkraft’s CEO Arne Lorenzen said;

“The Havsnäs Wind Farm demonstrates that wind energy is viable and successful in Sweden. There is great potential for further development, which can bring sustainable and clean power as well as employment opportunities and economic benefits to the local communities. He added; “We welcome ambitious national targets but also have to stress the need for a stable and predictable regulatory framework for the Swedish market to maintain developer and investor confidence and allow the wind power potential and its benefits to be fully realised.”
