The new project, which includes a LNG liquefaction plant with a capacity to export up to 15 million tonnes per annum, will allow US to export gas to overseas markets.

Technip said the liquefaction capacity could be achieved by building three identical trains, with associated utilities and offsite facilities, including re-use of the existing LNG offloading, storage and marine facilities.

BG Group’s subsidiary BG LNG Services will manage the design and construction of the Lake Charles facility as the appointed administrator under the FEED contract, while Air Products will supply its C3MR liquefaction process technology for the study.

Set for completion during the first half of 2014, the contract will be executed by Technip’s Houston operating center, with support from the company’s center in Paris, France.

Technip North America region senior vice-president David Dickson said, "Adding liquefaction capabilities to the existing infrastructure would provide the option of switching from regasification to liquefaction, depending on the world market for LNG."

"This award constitutes the first LNG liquefaction FEED project for Technip in the US. It is also a true testimony of BG Group and its partners’ trust in our expertise as, after working for them in the subsea and offshore businesses, we are now expanding our collaboration to onshore," Dickson added.
