The government has conducted two-year research and development on Tesco’s production of a unique fully renewable ethanol bio fuel.

The certification is in line with Tesco’s plan to become a zero carbon retailer by 2050.

The fuel, based on ethanol created from organic waste products, allowed Tesco to receive a renewable obligation certificate.

The fuel is currently being used to fuel specially adapted combined heat and power generators at two stores at Dumfries and Cheetham Hill.

Renewable Obligation Certificates are issued on each MWh of electricity generated by renewable power sources.

The company has allocated $4.1bn to invest in its biofuels business over the next five years, and will spend a further $300m on developing fuels for aviation.
