The Three Gorges hydroelectric project in China generated a record amount of hydroelectricity in 2014, beating a 2013 record set by the Itaipu project in Brazil, China Three Gorges Corporation has announced.

The plant – the world’s largest hydroelectric project at 22.5GW capacity – reportedly generated 98.8B kWh in 2014, up from 83.7B kWh in 2013 and 98.1B kWh in 2012. In 2013, the 14GW Itaipu scheme generated 98.6B kWh.

In a statement, CTGC said the project had eliminated 100 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions.
