THE GOVERNMENT OF CHONGQING, China, has underlined its concern for the environment by improving conditions around the Three Gorges project, say reports from the Xinhua news agency.
Measures taken to counteract the impacts of the scheme include the establishment of 108 monitoring stations, re-forestation of over-used agricultural land around the project and the construction of sewage treatment plants.
From 2001 to 2003, China spent US$484M on the prevention and control of geological disasters in the region, according to the Xinhua report.
