Keihin Product Operations and Toshiba IHI Power Systems Corporation will commence production of coils by the end of this month.

With a total of 18 coils, the ITER facility will initiate its plasma experiments in 2020.

The coils are used to produce strong magnetic fields that confine the high-temperature plasma required for nuclear fusion to occur.

Toshiba has been ordered to manufacture four toroidal field coils and six containers to hold the coils, while the deliveries are scheduled to start in 2017.

The ITER project is being funded and run by seven member entities: Japan, the European Union, the US, Russia, China, South Korea and India.

The project aims to demonstrate nuclear fusion as a viable future energy source.
