Jean-Pierre Hansen, chief executive of Tractebel, has hinted that it is likely to integrate more closely with its 40 per cent owned subsidiary Electrabel.

According to the Financial Times, Mr Hansen said the group was examining several options for a new structure, one of which was preserving the status quo. However, he said maintaining the status quo “had no pluses”. A decision is due soon. He added that Tractebel was looking into the possibility of linking with another large European energy producer, although he declined to specify which one.

A merger would allow the substantial cashflow of Electrabel to be funnelled into developing the international energy business of Tractebel, the world’s third biggest independent power producer (IPP).

A recent internal strategy review carried out by Tractebel concluded that the company should achieve double digit annual profits growth over the nexct five years.
