Combined, the two projects are capable of producing 159MW of renewable energy, enough to meet the needs of over 17,000 homes.

Both wind farms are part of the Cartier wind energy project, which is 62% owned by TransCanada and 38% by Innergex Renewable Energy.

TransCanada president and CEO Russ Girling said the company is positioned to complete another $12bn of new projects that are expected to come into service by 2014.

TransCanada is developing the five-phase Cartier wind energy project, with a total capacity of 590MW, in various communities in the region of Gaspesie, Iles-de-la-Madeleine and the Regional County Municipality of Matane.

Hydro-Quebec will buy all of the power produced by the project, under a 20-year power purchase agreement.
