The main work at the Palmerston substation was to replace the 22kV switchgear, a 110/22kV power transformer and the 220kV equipment. The old equipment had reached the end of its useful life and had become expensive to maintain in reliable working condition.

The scope of work also included upgrading the protection and control systems and the lightning protection system, and installing a supervisory control and data acquisition system.

Mike Hunnibell, Transend’s general manager of transmission services, said: The Palmerston substation is critical to the transmission system because it is an integral part of the 220kV transmission interconnection between the north and south of the state. The substation also provides an interconnection between the 220kV and 110kV parts of the transmission system.
