Turkish coal mining agency director general Burhan Inan told Turkish state television TRT that the leak occurred as the miners were digging for access to a coal deposit.
Inan said that six workers were evacuated unharmed while one sustained injuries.
Located in northwestern Turkey on the Black Sea coast, the mine discharged toxic methane gas, which trapped workers under coal dust that followed the discharge.
The accident occurs just as the country begins a shut down of mines that pose higher risks and those that do not have an operating license.
Turkey has recently undertaken several initiatives to enhance safety of miners in the country.
