The calculator identifies that, when sourced responsibly, biomass can be utilised in a low carbon and sustainable method.

It gives new data on which biomass resources may have higher or lower carbon intensities.

In 2012, the UK Government published Bioenergy Strategy to use bioenergy from sustainable sources only.

The DECC unveiled new biomass sustainability criteria in August 2013 and is planning to strengthen it further.

As part of the plans, generators who are unable to meet with the government’s sustainability criteria will lose financial incentives from 2015.

The DECC said the government also strongly supports work in the EU and more widely to improve global carbon accounting and management practices.

UK Energy and Climate Change Secretary Ed Davey said: "In the short term, biomass can help us decarbonise our electricity supplies, and we are committed to supporting cost-effective, sustainably produced biomass.

"This calculator shows that, done well, biomass can offer real carbon savings – which is why we are tightening our rules for sustainable biomass. Any producer who doesn’t meet those standards will lose financial support from next year."
