The site is in close proximity to the Tummalapalle mine in the district where the company had recently commissioned a processing plant.

Expected to produce 6,000TPD (tons per day) of uranium ore, the new site will add to the current capacity of 3,000TPD generated at Tummalapalle.

UCIL chairman and managing director Diwakar Acharya told The Times of India that the Kanampalle site is the biggest uranium mine discovered by the company and it plans to set up a processing plant at the site by 2017.

"With an investment of about Rs 750 crore, we plan to expand the Tummalapalee project to excavate additional 1500TPD uranium ore, which we had identified sometime back," added Acharya.

The company is also looking to expand operations at the Jadugora and Narwapahar mines with feasibility studies at both locations currently underway.
