The exercise, which is scheduled to take place during this week, is aimed at assessing the ability of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to respond to an emergency at Susquehanna Steam Electric Station in Luzerne County, US.

FEMA Region III acting regional administrator Robert Welch said these drills are held every alternate year to evaluate government’s ability to protect public health and safety.

"We will assess state and local emergency response capabilities within the 10-mile Emergency Planning Zone of the nuclear facility," Welch added.

The agency would send its evaluation report to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission within 90 days for use in licensing decisions.
